What is the digital euro?
The digital euro is a planned digital form of central bank money issued by the ECB. Designed to complement cash, it will be available for both online and offline payments.
A final political decision on the digital euro is expected by the end of 2026. Financial service providers are then likely to begin implementation in 2027, with the earliest possible launch currently envisaged for 2029. Banks and payment service providers should therefore start planning their resources, budgets, system landscapes and make-or-buy decisions well in advance.
